Why does that framing look so strange?

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

The framing of The Classic Modern House is drawing a lot of questions at the moment, because it just looks weird. The reason it currently looks so strange is because the steel beams, which support the roof and are a major design feature in most of the home, aren't installed yet. As happens with construction projects, the subcontractor installing the beams had another project in Washington to complete before moving on to our project. The beams will be installed next week via crane, which I am sure will attract the attention of many little boys in the neighborhood.

The framer decided to hold off on framing the front wall of the living / dining area and the fireplace until the beams are in place. The walls at the front of the house have clerestory windows above them, so the walls will appear short themselves when installed.

The back wall of the living / dining area is full height glass, so there will not be any framing installed on that elevation, which means the center of the house is basically devoid of framing right now. Instead the framers have moved forward with the South side of the home where the second level is located. I've attached progress images below, including a couple of fun pictures of our contractor Larry LaTour of LaTour Construction Management and the framers working in the rain today.
